Monitoring and Securing Computer Networks in an Educational Setting

Schools, colleges and universities face unique challenges in monitoring and securing their data networks, while at the same time protecting students’ security and privacy. The cybersecurity challenges lie in both the students (and other authorized users) and outsiders (i.e. hackers). School networks can unwittingly become hosts for incidents of cyberbullying and cyberstalking; for illegally downloaded content; for ID theft; for gradebook hacking; for information theft and destruction and for a number of other undesirable cyber-activities — school servers can even become hijacked for use in DoS, DDoS and other botnet / hacking campaigns.
